America was becoming a global power. With a sound economy, and Spanish-American War hero Theodore Roosevelt sharing the ticket, McKinley ran for reelection. He won a sweeping victory. In September 1901, President McKinley attended the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, a spectacular display of technology for the new century. While greeting guests in a reception line, the president was shot. Eight days later, he died, the third president since the Civil War to be assassinated.
